Abstract
Woody vines (also known as climbers or lianas) are silviculturally a nuisance in dipterocarp forests. Vine cutting prior to logging has never been carefully examined but is supposed to be a routine treatment in forests managed with the Malayan Uniform Silvicultural System. In this study we compare the effects of several post-felling silvicultural treatments (tree thinning and vine cutting) on the proportion of trees carrying vines. We examine data on the effects of vines on the form and growth rates of trees during the first 3-5 years after treatment. Finally we propose several hypotheses that may explain how some trees remain vine-free while neighbouring trees become completely smothered with vines.
