Abstract
The Hybrid 1 pineapple is a new variety developed at MARDI after a decade of breeding and selection. Derived from a cross between Singapore Spanish and Smooth Cayenne it was a high yielding widely adaptable variety with good canning characteristics and may serve to replace the antiquated Singapore Spanish which had been cultivated in Malaysia for nearly a century. The improved yield and recovery rate of this new variety held promise in generating additional earnings for the industry and concomitantly the income of smallholders as well
