Abstract

It was the duty of all those involved in the manufacture sale advertising and importation of food to understand and conform to all acts and regulations governing the food business. The main objective of the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulation 1985 was to protect consumers from health hazard caused by food. The regulations required food to be prepared under clean sanitary condition and the label declared on the packages were truthful informative and not misleading. At the same time the Food Regulations 1985 assisted manufactures in implementing proper practices to avoid prosecution and prevent losses due to spoilage and improper manufacturing techniques. This paper explained the industries responsibility in the layman's language with regard to the Food Regulations 1985 pertaining to sampling labelling date marking packaging additives and contaminants and the minimum requirement of mandatory standards for specific foods
