Abstract
Geronggang - a light hardwood botanically from the lighter species of Cratoxylum spp. of family Hypericaceae. The timber is relatively light with an air-dry density ranging from 350 - 610 kg/m3 (22-38 lb/cu. ft.). The sapwood is yellow with a pink tinge and is moderately sharply differentiated from the heartwood which is dark pink or light brick red. Grain is straight or shallowly interlocked and texture is moderately coarse but even. The timber is easy to resaw and cross cut. Planing is easy giving a smooth planed surface. The timber dries rapidly without any serious form of degrade. The timber is relatively weak and non-durable but easy to treat with preservatives. Geronggang is classified under strength group D. Its uses are mainly as general utility timber. It is suitable for joinery furniture manufacture panelling moulding veneer for plywood manufacture particleboard and wood wool cementboard
