Abstract
Kembang Semangkok is the standard Malaysian name for the timber of Scaphium species (family Sterculiaceae). The timber is soft to moderately soft and light to moderately heavy with density ranging from 515 - 755 kg/m3 air-dry. The sapwood is lighter in shade merging gradually into heartwood which is yellow-brown light buff or light brown. Texture of the wood is slightly coarse and uneven and with straight to shallowly interlocked grain. The timber is generally easily worked when green but slightly difficult when dried. Nailing property is rated as good. Kembang Semangkok seasons fairly rapidly as it takes about 3 months to air dry a 40 mm thick board. Shrinkage of the timber from green to air-dry condition is about 1.2 percent radially and 3.0 percent tangentially. For kiln drying schedule H is recommended. The timber is fairly strong and is classi0940fied under strength group C. It is moderately durable under exposed conditions and is very easily treated with preservatives. Uses of the timber include plywood manufacture furniture panelling partitioning and match spl
