Arumugam P.T., . and Kuppan P., . Preliminary observations on delayed initial feeding of Clarias macrocephalus (Gunther) larvae. pp. 23-28. ISSN 0126-8643
Abstract
A study on the effects of delayed initial feeding on growth and survival of the larvae of Clarias macrocephalus was carried out. At commencement of initial feeding one batch of C. macrocephalus larvae was starved for a period of zero to six days. Another batch of larvae was starved for a period of zero to five days and after each period of starvation the starved larvae were fed with freshly hatched Artemia nauplii for six days. The starved larvae survived for about seven days living on their yolk reserves. The weight of starved larvae decreased while length increased with increase in starvation time. After three days of starvation the larvae were emaciated and sluggish in swimming movements. The starved larvae could feed successfully on Artemia nauplii and exhibited growth responses up to three days of starvation time. The point-of-no-return for C. macrocephalus lavae would be two to three days after the stage when initial feeding began.
