Abstract
The scope of research in the Farm Mechanisation Unit covers replanting to post-harvesting activities in the oil palm industry. PORIM's Farm Mechanisation Committee has identified harvesting and transportation of FFB to be the priority areas in view of the current labour shortage problem. This paper describes the progress achieved by the unit in the last two years and the current research projects being undertaken. While research in mechanisation of transportation of FFB has shown very promising results the mechanisation of harvesting is still unsatisfactory. In addition to these activities other research projects include a study of the effects of soil compaction caused by wheeled traffic in oil palm plantations and the design of an implement for pulverising the trunk during clearing of old oil palm stands.
