Abstract

Poverty is not just a problem of low income. It could be viewed also from the dimension of food and nutritional intake. Studies have shown the relationship of poverty lack of protein low productivity low resistance to disease and low income in a vicious circle. This study attempts to analyse the relationship between nutrition and the socioeconomic status of households in Kampung Air Molek Alor Gajah Malacca by the use of a multiple regression model. The result shows the low calorie intake among the households. Age educational status number of dependents hours work total expenditure and total income significantly affect the calorie and protein intake among the households. This implies that programmes to increase the calorie and protein intake will have to consider the above factors. Income and expenditure are the most significant factors affecting calorie intake. Hence increasing the households income will contribute towards improving the nutritional status of the poor households. Poverty alleviating programmes in addition to increasing income opportunities should also attempt to improve the nutritional status of poor households.
