Abstract

A major problem currently found in FELDA cocoa fields is the presence of multi-storied tall trees and interlocking branches inside the cocoa canopy itself. This causes difficulties in carrying out field operations including harvesting and consequently reduces yield significantly. The problem is due to insufficient pruning to maintain the primary jorquette in the past. Yield can be improved by lowering the canopy and improving tree vigour through several rounds of scheduled canopy pruning operations. It begins with pollarding the secondary jorquette followed by three rounds of canopy sanitation pruning of the interlocking branches that are extended into the neighbouring trees.
