Abstract

Coffee canephora (Robusta) and Coffea liberica (Liberica) are the two coffee species grown in Malaysia. Little has been done for the improvement of coffee planting materials. As germplasm is lacking in Malaysia a determined effort has been made by PKPF to broaden the germplasm collection. Within Malaysia Liberica germplasm has been collected from Tawau in Sabah Banting in Selangor and Jengka 24 in Pahang. The Jengka 24 selections come from trees which have been yield recorded by PKPF and good yield responses are expected. For Robusta germplasm 25 clones were obtained from the IRCC in Vanuatu and these clones represented a wide cross-section of commercially exploited clones grown in several African countries. Other clones have been obtained from MARDI and the Dept. of Agriculture Sabah. Selection were also made from high yielding trees in PKPF's commercial block of Robusta. Besides these five accessions of Catimor coffee have also been incorporated into the germplasm collection. All these materials are now being evaluated with a view of releasing better coffee planting materials in the near future.
