Abstract

Management practices of cotton insect pests in Zambia are described in relation to farmers' pest problems and their perception of the problems available options and objectives. Cotton farmers oversprayed due to perceived losses and effectiveness of insecticides. They dared not risk tolerating even low populations of insect pests. The recommendations on scouting based sprays were not practised entirely at present. There is a need to improve the timing of insecticide sprays. The potential areas of improvement in decision making by small-scale cotton farmers particularly in practical implementation of insect pest management is reported.
