Abstract

Damage by the rice whorl maggot (RWM) Hydrellia philippina Ferino on a modern cultivar was scored at 21 29 36 and 43 days after transplanting using individually tagged plants. Yield components were evaluated at levels of damage from 0 to 100. In general there were no significant differences in any of the yield components among plants with different damage levels. Some variations in the numbers of panicles/m2 and percent filled grains were recorded but were not correlated to RMW damage. At the damage levels from 60 to 100 there was a gradual but significant decline in yield with increased RWM damage. Since RWM damage can be compensated by plant growth chemical insecticide control is not recommended.
