Abstract

Field trials were conducted at the experimental farm of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) during the dry and wet seasons of 1985 to determine the competitive ability of Ischaemum rugosum Salisb. against transplanted rice (Oryza sativa L.). Competition between rice and I. rugosum was more intense during the wet season than the dry. A density of five I. rugosum plants/m2 reduced rice yield significantly during the wet season. In the dry season 20 I. rugosum plants/m2 were required to cause significant yeild reductions. In both seasons the number of tillers and the dry matter production of rice were reduced by competition with higher densities of I. rugosum. Rice height was not affected by competition but I. rugosum height increased indicating that the weed could compete better for light.
