Abstract

This paper elucidates the effects of different levels of phosphorus nutrition on growth and mineral uptake in seedlings of Pinus caribaea Mor var. hondurensis. Increase in phosphorus supply in quartz sand cultures first boosted the extension and collar diameter growth but later showed inhibition. A similar pattern was observed in total fresh weight and dry weight of needles and stem. Dry weight of roots was not influenced by phosphorus levels. The increase in phosphorus from sub-optimal to supra-optimal level decreased the total nitrogen content in the needle and stem. The roots showed higher phosphorus accumulation at both the levels tried. Maximum potassium accumulation in both phosphorus levels was observed in needles and minimum in roots. The level of calcium and magnesium was reduced due to increase in the level of phosphorus upto supra-optimal level.
