Abstract

The traditional method of ratoon clearing by slashing followed by sun-drying and burning after 12-14 weeks is time consuming. A chemical method was developed in 1973 using paraquat at 0.56 kg a.i./ha in 800 L of water followed by burning after 5 or 7 weeks. However it is necessary to develop an improved chemical method as planting density has increased from 47 000 plants/ha to 59 000 plants/ha and also due to the spread of Asystasia a weed species. It was found that spraying paraquat followed by burning and a second spraying before planting was effective. After the second spraying krovar at 2.5 kg/ha in 600 L of water/ha was sprayed to control Asystasia seedlings followed by hand weeding. This improved method could save about 154 (Ringgit)/ha for the first and second crops.
