Abstract

The caseworm Nymphula depunctalis and the armyworm Spodoptera mauritia are among the insect pests which are of importance to rice crop. Although their occurrence is sporadic and the damage they cause represent only a small part of the total yield loss caused by rice insect pests they are very significant in localized outbreaks. Damage to the rice crop is caused by the larvae feeding on the leaves. Caseworm infestation usually occurs in rice fields with standing water which can begin in a flooded seedbed but does not occur after maximum tillering. The armyworm occurs in all rice environment and its population is more abundant in the rainy season. In outbreak situation both the caseworm and the armyworm can be controlled easily by low level toxicity insecticides. To prevent or minimize damage by these insect pests some cultural practises may be employed.
