Abstract

This is a preliminary study of a larger research and development project for producing improved planting stock. It also served to train the local inexperienced staff the art of raising rooted-cuttings with coppice material as source. Stumps of 8 plus trees and 22 other surrounding trees in a 6 years old Gmelina arborea Roxb. (Yemane) plantation were assessed for coppice production 54 to 57 days after felling. The number of coppice per stump varied from 4 to 38 with an average of 16.7. Their height range was from 2 cm to 148 cm. The potential for clonal forestry in Peninsular Malaysia appears to be bright as all the plus tree showed good coppicing ability and had growth dimensions within the range of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla clones. These clones were taken after intensive selection and testing at Aracruz Florestal Brazil.
