Abstract
Livestock production in this country is dichotomous. The poultry and swine sub-sectors have become commercialized and export orientated. The ruminant sub-sectors however has considerable scope for expansion and import substitution. The low productivity level of the indigenous breeds high investment costs for development of pasture and competition from crop production have impeded ruminant sub-sector growth. Future progress of the industry depends on its ability to improve productivity and production efficiency.
