Abstract
The role of biotechnology in food industries cover the applications of microbial plant and animal cells or their products such as enzymes. Microorganisms can be harvested as biomass. They can also be used to produce metabolites or induce chemical changes and as a source of biologically active molecules which influence the quality of food products. Food biotechnology encompasses the diciplines of microbiology biology biochemistry chemistry and process engineering. This article also discusses aspects related to the present status and future potential of food biotechnology.
