Abstract

Buprofezin is an insect growth regulator that kills the insects through interruption of cuticle formation. It is effective against the hoppers (brown planthopper whitebacked planthopper and green leafhoppers). Buprofezin only kills the nymphs during molting thus the insect will only die 3-5 days after treatment. Eggs from the treated plants can still hatch but the resulting nymphs do not service. At 60 (Ringgit)/ha (100 g a.i./ha) buprofezin costs comparatively more than BPMC which costs only 22 (Ringgit) (500 g a.i./ha) for the EC formulation while the dust formulation costs 52 (Ringgit)/ha. Although buprofezin costs more its residual effect is longer compared with the existing chemical. Buprofezin therefore allows application frequency to be reduced at lower dose rates. Buprofezin is also safe to the natural enemies and fish. It is effective at 100 g a.i./ha.
