Abstract

Mali a developing nation in West Africa is a semi-arid agricultural country. Sherpherding is one of the main activities while livestock and livestock products is the third major export commodity after cotton and groundnut. Three livestock production systems are practised in Mali: the agro-pastoral sedentary transhumant and nomadic. The Bambara and Ramaibe ethnic groups practise the agro-pastoral sedentary system. The Moors Fulani and Tuareg tribes are involved in the transhumant husbandry. The Tuareg also practises the nomadic system. Livestock performance from the three management systems is also described.
