Abstract

The growth and survival of varicose borer Agrilus sexsignatus (Fisher) larvae implanted in the stem of normally growing trees were studied in 1983 to 1984 on two stands of Philippine provenance of bagras Eucalyptus deglupta Blume in the industrial tree plantation of the Paper Industries Corporation of the Philippines in Surigao del Sur. Results show prolonged larval development period and extremely high mortality rate of borer larvae. Only 3 percent of 91 larvae that tunnelled survived but were still in larvae stage 12 months after implantation. Fifty one percent died before pupation and 46 percent died in pupal cells. The abnormal growth and extremely high mortality rate of implanted larvae confirm native bagras is resistent to varicose borer.
