Isoenzyme variations of some edible Alliums

Abstract

Fresh leaf extracts of 4 species (including 2 varieties and 2 cultivars) of edible alliums were analysed for isozyme variation for peroxidase (PER) malic dehydrogenase (MDH) esterase (EST) alkaline phosphatase (AKP) and glutamateoxaloacetate transaminase (GOT). MDH is monomorphic whereas AKP GOT and PER reveal some variation. Of the isozymes of the 5 enzymes investigated only esterase shows meaningful variation between and within species.
