Abstract
A scheme to breed polygenic (horizontal) resistance (HR) to South American Leaf Blight (SALB) of rubber is proposed. It is based upon biometrical genetic principles and analogy with successfull HR to diverse diseases in other crops. There is already some experimental evidence of the existence of low levels of HR to SALB in rubber and fairly rapid response per generation could reasonably be expected. The objective would have to be concentrated on breeding resistant crown clones and the work would have to be done in the field in a place where SALB was reliably epidemic.
