Abstract

The most serious disease of oil palm in West Africa is vascular wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. elaeidis. Fusarium wilt has also been reported in Brazil but not in Malaysia although Malaysian palms are known to be highly susceptible. Oil palm pollen and seed can be contaminated with the pathogen allowing the possible introduction of the disease into Malaysia. A strict importation ban has been implemented but long-term restriction on pollen and seed importation could have serious implications for Malaysian breeding programmes and decontamination methods should be found. The absence of the disease in Malaysia may depend on components of the microflora of Malaysian soils including native avirulent strains of F. oxysporum being antagonistic to virulent strains.
