Abstract
It is recommended that asparagus spears be harvested at 15-25 cm which is the maximum length achieved before the bracts open. This is based on daily measurements of spear length beginning from the day it emerges until the day the bract opens. Observation shows that a majority of the spears already had open bracts by day five. Study also showed that longer spears did not necessarily result in longer edible portion.
