Abstract

Bamboo shoots are formed from underground rhizomes during the rainy season. Each production period lasts for about 50-60 days. Harvesting should be done as soon as the sheath appears above the ground to obtain high quality shoots. Out of 70 bamboo species found in Malaysia Bambusa blumeana Dendrocalamus asper Gigantochloa levis and G. ligulata produce delicious shoots. Dendrocalamus asper shoots have been in the commercial market world-wide. Nutritional value of bamboo shoots are discussed. Sympodial bamboos are normally propagated vegetatively from 1 to 2-year-old stems by planting offsets or 3 to 4-node cuttings.
