Abdul Ghani Mohamed, . Suitable size of D 24 durian clone planting material for infield growth and survival. pp. 13-19. ISSN 0127-7944
Abstract
Budded durian planting materials with bigger trunk circumference (2.5-3.0 cm and more than 3.0 cm) were observed to grow better than those with smaller circumference (less than 2.0 cm and 2.0-2.4 cm). The survival rate was about 66-75 percent. This rate was maintained since the 12th month after field planting for materials with trunk circumference greater than 3.0 cm. Smaller planting materials had lower percentage of survival (29-35 percent) after field planting. Taller planting materials (0.50-0.75 m and more than 0.75 m) showed better growth than shorter ones (less than 0.5 m). Planting success of the taller plants was 67-70 percent and thus remained so till 14-16 months after planting. On the other hand shorter plants (less than 0.5 m) recorded 37 percent of success and were unable to maintain it up to 16 months after planting. Bigger planting materials were of better quality produced better growth with good survival rate compared with smaller planting materials. Choice of quality planting materials is important to ensure good growth and maximum survival in the field especially for durian clone D 24 which is very difficult to establish.
