Abstract

Based on the fifteen isozymic loci detected by starch gel electrophoresis genetic variability and genetic relationships in the four Malaysian catfish species can be examined. The proportion of polymorphic loci ranged from 0.000 in Clarias macrocephalus to 0.533 in Prophagorus cataractus. The average observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.000 in C. macrocephalus to 0.160 in P. cataractus. The highest variability was found in P. cataractus followed by Mystus nemurus and Clarias batrachus and no variation in C. macrocephalus. A genetic distance between species of the same genus was about 0.758 1.248 to 1.488 between species of different genera in the same family and 5.468 to infinite among families. Dendrogram drawn based on genetic distance clearly reflected the morphological taxonomy.
