Abstract

Large and medium mangosteen seeds (1.1-1.6 g) produced 90-100 percent germination success. Removing the seed coat not only improved the germination success but also reduced the time taken to complete germination by 1-2 weeks. Low percentage of germination (45-60 percent) and smaller seedlings were obtained from very small seeds weighing less than 0.8 g. Mangosteen seed is sensitive to dehydration and lost its vigour when the seed moisture content is less than 20 percent. Seeds sown immediately after removal of the flesh and seed coat gave very high germination percentage. Soil mixture containing 3:2:1 of sand:soil:organic material was most suitable for early growth of mangosteen seedlings in the nursery. Increasing the organic matter content inhibited the growth of the seedlings.
