Abstract

Nine enzymes and one protein were surveyed to estimate the genetic control of isozymes and its characteristics in the four species of Malaysian catfish using 12 percent starch gel electrophoresis in a continuous buffer system C-AMP pH 6.0 and 7.0. Fifteen isozymic loci were estimated in Mystus nemurus in which four were found to be polymorphic no variation at the sixteen loci in Clarias macrocephalus but three of the sixteen loci were found to be polymorphic in Clarias batrachus and eighteen loci in Prophagorus cataractus out of which nine were found to be polymorphic. Liver-specific MDH-C isozyme which is considered as special in Malaysian catfish was observed in C. macrocephalus C. batrachus and P. cataractus but not in M. nemurus.
