Abstract

The effect of the new synthetic pyrethroid L-cyhalothrin on the survival and abundance of Aphis craccivora relative to two established 'standard' insecticides were examined in laboratory cage and field experiments. L-cyhalothrin at 5.0 and 7.5 g a.i./ha achieved 100 aphid mortality within 60 min. These compared favourably with the existing pyrethroid standard cypermethrin at 15 g a.i./ha. In addition L-cyhalothrin persistently suppressed aphid abundance and build-up. In contrast the mixture of cypermethrin and dimethoate (3:25 ratio) dit not kill all aphids even after 120 min exposure nor did it prevent a build-up in aphid numbers. It was demonstrated that at much lower rates of applications L-cyhalothrin was more effective in reducing aphid population compared to the previous standards. Further studies are in progress to determine the extent to which suppression of vector numbers by L-cythalothrin can influence the incidence of aphid-transmitted viruses of cowpeas.
