Abstract
The centre of origin and diversity of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is in the Upper Amazonian region of South America. This paper gives a brief description of the origin and locations of the Forastero Criollo and Trinitario populations and the expeditions to collect cocoa germplasm for use in breeding and selection programmes. Descriptions for characterizing cocoa genotypes are briefly illustrated using data collected from the cocoa germplasm assembled at PPP Tun Razak.
