Abstract
The loss of nutrients through leaching as a result of application of raw and digested palm oil mill effluent (POME) on Segamat series soil in lysimeters was investigated. Raw POME was applied at a rate of 1.78 rain equivalent millimetres (rem) over 1175 days while digested POME was applied at 3.56 rem over 475 days. Rainfall was simulated at a rate of 2159 rem/year applied evenly twice weekly. The leachates collected were analysed for N P K Ca and Mg contents. At the end of the study soil samples were collected every 15 cm depth for POME treated and control lysimeters. The pH total-N available P exchangeable Ca and exchangeable Mg contents were analysed. Results indicate that the nutrients leached over the entire length of the study as compared to the nutrients added via raw POME were Ca (41.4 percent) K (37.7 percent) Mg (7.7 percent) N (0.4 percent) P (0.2 percent). For digested POME application the order was the same where Ca (30.7 percent) K (16.3 percent) Mg (11.5 percent) N (0.9 percent) P (0.5 percent). Soil analysis indicate that through raw or digested POME application there was a considerable increase in pH total-N avail-P ex-K ex-Ca and ex-Mg contents compared to the control.
