Abstract

Observations were made on two Auricularia species that are often found in Malaysia. Sixteen monokaryons of Auricularia polytricha and 12 of A. fuscosuccinea were mated in all their possible combinations. A polytricha was found to have a bipolar heterothallic mating system. Two types of mating reactions compatible and incomptible were identified with a compatibility percentage of 50 percents. A fuscosuccinea on the other hand was found to have a tetrapolar heterothallic mating system where four types of mating reactions were identified. They are the compatibility incompatibility common A and common B reactions with a compatible percentage of 25.8 percents. A compatible mating could be proven by the presence of the clamp connection structure. An incompatible mating did not have this structure and its mycelium was less dense. Common A showed flat mycelium while common B had false clamp connections and also a clear 'barrage' reaction
