Abstract
Lignocellulosic materials are potentially rich sources of energy. However their utilization is limited by the complex structure of the cell wall which inhibits microbial attachment as well as enzymic activity. Various forms of pretreatments (chemical physical and biological) have been found to enhance the digestibility of lignocellulosic materials. Improving the utilization of lignocelluloses for increasing animal production could be achieved by providing appropriate supplement programmes to meet the needs of the rumen ecosystem and the host animal. The role of the rumen microorganisms in the degradation of lignocellulosic materials is also highlighted
