Abstract
The paper indicates the importance of national parks and protected areas for the conservation of biological diversity. It is stated that the world's network of protected areas totals more than four million sq km. These areas are still inadequate to constitute a representative sample of the earths's ecosystem. Problems resulting in the loss of biological diversity are highlighted and suggestions are made to reduce or solve them.
