Abstract

The paper presents the result of a study to document the species composition and distribution of butterflies along Sungai Kinchin and its vicinity. A checklist of butterflies collected or sighted from this region is presented. A total of 232 species were recorded which includes two new sub species ((Cebrella (Chelakina) nigerrima kerionga)) and ((Arhopala sintanga tani)) and a hitherto unknown female of ((Bibasis ownstoni)). The montane species ((Miletus nymphis fictus)) and ((Pyroneura aurantiaca montivaga)) have been recorded for the first time in lowland forest while the very rare ((Taenaris horsfieldii birchi)) previously restricted to primary forest in Johore was collected and sighted on several occasions in Rompin-Endau in Pahang. Comparisons are made with the butterfly lists of the Kuala Jasin region in Johroe and Taman Negara in Pahang. Species composition on different habitat types is also discussed. Observations on the territorial behaviour of ((Eetion elia)) ((Thauria aliris)) ((Allotinus leogoron)) ((A.horsfieldi)) and ((Charaxes bernardus)) are reported.
