Abstract

The red coconut scale (Furcaspis oceanica) a pest of coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) is endemic to Caroline Islands. It became widespread in Saipan at the end of World War II but the introduction of an effective parasitic wasp Adelencyrtys oceanicus from Ulithi Atoll in 1948 resulted in successful biological control of the scale. In Guam it was accidently introdued in early 1970s and became established in the central part of the island. A survey of local natural enemies indicated that A. oceanicus was absent in Guam. Consequently this parasitoid was introduced in May-June and October-November 1988 and again in April 1989. Establishment of A. oceanicus was confirmed in June 1989 from the first release site and in December 1989 from the second release site. The relative importance of natural enemies and the distribution of F. oceanica in Micronesia are also discussed
