Abstract

Hevea rubber a native of the Amazon jungle was first introduced in the late nineteenth century into the Far East where opening of large commercial rubber plantations resulted in widespread clearing of humid tropical jungles. From the onset agronomic techniques adopted in the planting of rubber have enabled some degree of environmental (soil and vegetative) conservation and also enhancement of native soil nutrient status through fertilizer use and legume cover establishment. Rubber cultivation ensured rapid ground coverage and also generated biomass and biomass nutrient potentials approximating that for humid tropical forests. Furthermore the mature Hevea ecosystem is also discussed to be a more efficient nutritionally self-sustaining ecosystem than the oil palm
