Abstract
Contrary to common belief the water monitor Varanus salvator does not normally feed on carrion but prefers to capture live prey. Individuals are able to follow a scent trail and scent a rotten carcass up to 100 m away. They only feed on carrion if found within their home range and will normally not venture out of this area even when they can smell a carcass nearby. Water monitors prefer a fresh carcass to a rotten one. An individual feeding on carrion can easily be made to leave the carrion and hunt a moving prey. Hatchlings were not found to feed on carrion
