Abstract

In Malaysia buffaloes play an important role in the oil palm industry in the transportation of oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB) from the palms to roadside collection points. Buffaloes are very versatile and well adapted to work on the general terrain of oil palm estates. They are extremely useful and complementary to mechanised methods of FFB evacuation especially during the monsoon season in areas that are inaccessible to mechanised vehicles. Male swamp buffaloes Bubalus bubalis of approximately 750 kg are used in this system of FFB collection. The buffalo is yoked or harnessed to a sleigh or cart and FFBs are loaded onto the sleigh. Each FFB weighs about 20 kg. The sleigh weighs about 100kg and holds a load of about 30 FFB amounting to 500 kg. The total weight hauled by the buffalo is about 600 kg. In a normal working day a buffalo would pull an average 2500 kg and travel 1250 meters covering about 2.43 hectares (Kehoe and Chan 1982). Depending on the terrain size of animal and load this work can be very strenuous and demanding
