Abstract
Trials were established to compare the use of a paraquat mixture and glyphosate (Isopropylamine salt) and/or its mixtures on weed succession pertaining to general weed control in rubber and oil palm plantings. In immature crops under legume cover crops (LCC) Paspalum conjugatum and Ottochloa nodosa dominant weed regimes sequentials spraying of the paraquat mixture caused no obvious shift of vegetation whereas glyphosate and its mixtures caused a large reduction in P. conjugatum and O. nodosa with emergence of broader spectrum of broadleaf weeds such as Asystasia gangetica Borreria latifolia Mikana micrantha and Erechthites valerianifolia in higher proportion as succeeding vegetation. LCC proportion was generally maintained for all treatments due to their encroachment from the inter-rows. In mature crops where Axonopus compressus and Ageratum conyzoides were the dominant weeds a single application of glyphosate and its mixtures resulted in a shift to predominately broadleaf weeds whereas paraquat mixture maintained similar floral composition compared to pre-application. The differences in weed succession for the various treatments in relation to soil degradation invasion of noxious weeds and weed management are discussed
