Abstract

Out of 107 rattan species in Peninsular Malaysia about 20 species are being used by the industry. Due to large consumption by about 640 mills several species need to be planted on a large scale. The habitat requirement growth characteristics distribution and the contribution to the rattan industry of Calamus manan C. caesius and C. palustris are described. C. manan found mainly on slopes of hill dipterocarp forests abundant between 600-1000 m altitude; C. caesius is a clustering small diameter species which requires shade during establishment and is found to grow in areas of high water table while C. palustris is found in secondary forest or belukar and can be found in abandoned rubber estates
