Abstract
A total of 226 flowers of Magnolia acuminata a member of archaic angiosperms were used in this selfing and outcrossing experiment to investigate phenological response in relation to genetic relatedness among and within branches in this species. Percentage of functional seeds and biomass production were used as measurement. The result from this study indicates that inter-tree crossing (xenogamy) produced far better ideal-looking healthy fruits than selfing. Statistical analyses indicate that percentage of functional seeds produced in out-crossed fruits is almost 30 times more than the one produced by selfing with adjacent flowers within the same tree. The mean of seed and tissue biomass of these fruits is also significantly higher than fruits from selfing treatment. In contrast seed set and biomass production in inter-branch geitonogamy is not significantly higher than intra-branch pollination. Low productivity in autogamic and geitonogamic fruits in Magnolia acuminata indicates that perhaps this species is the remnant of an archaic self compatibility system before evolving to all in-compatibility in much advanced taxa
