Abstract

Chromium levels in aquatic plants and water samples from some mining pools found in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were investigated. No correlation could be established between metal contents in plants and water. The results showed that all the plants were able to accumulate metal from the surrounding water and this ability is mainly dependent on the plant species. Laboratory study on the uptake of chromium by Hydrilla verticillata shows that the uptake was higher in distilled water than in pool water. The effect of phosphate on the chromium uptake was also investigated. The results demonstrate that high phosphate level suppressed the uptake of chromium by Hydrilla
