Abstract

Experiments were conducted in Kerala (South India) to identify stable and adapted clones within the ABB group of bananas. Twenty-eight clones representing five geographical locations viz. Fiji North-East India South India Sri Lanka and the West Indies were evaluated for nine years. Stability and adaptation were judged based on the overall performance in terms of bunch weight number of hands number of fingers duration total soluble solids (TSS) and reactions towards yield limiting biotic stresses caused by the rhizome weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) banana nematode (Radopholus similis) and Sigatoka leaf-spot (Mycosphaerella musicola). The study established 'Chakkia' a clone originating from North-East India as stable and adaptable. 'KNR 2/75' (a breeding line) 'Beula' 'Ashybathees' 'Jamani' 'Malaimonthan' and 'Korpooravalli' were promising. 'Kosthabontha' was free from damage caused by rhizome weevil. 'Malaimonthan' 'Peykunnan' and 'Jamani' possess a moderate level of multiple resistance to the rhizome weevil nematode and Sigatoka leaf-spot. 'KNR 2/75' 'Karpooravalli' and 'Peykunnan' have high TSS values (29.0) and are suitable as dessert bananas
