Abstract

Flower bud development in cocoa (Theobroma cacao) was a slow process and it took 21-24 days for a newly emerged flower bud to mature. Anthesis commenced between 14.00 and 16.00 hours and completed between 02.00 and 04.00 hours the next day. Anther dehiscence commenced between 04.00 and 06.00 hours and completed by 08.00 to 10.00 hours. Stigma receptivity was found to be high between 12.00 and 14.00 hours. No fruit set was observed in bagged flowers. Seven insects belonging to the order Diptera and five formicid species belonging to the order Hymenoptera were identified as floral visitors. Pollen viability was found to be 97.10 per cent by the aceocarmine staining method and 66.25 per cent in the in vitro germination method
