Abstract

Intra- and inter-species comparisons between the release rates of ammonia and urea were shown to increase significantly with increasing snail biomass. On the other hand the weight specific excretory rates as micromoles/g (total wet weight)/day) of ammonia and urea were shown to decrease significantly with increasing snail biomass. There were also significant differences in the majority of cases when the inter-species comparisons of weight specific excretory rates of ammonia and urea were considered. The inter-species variation in the rates of excretion of ammonia and urea were also shown to be related to the inter-specific differences between the proportion of dry body weight and shell weight. Ecophysiological aspects of nitrogen metabolism in various species of freshwater snails were discussed
