Abstract
Thirty-nine species of ants were collected from 18 cocoa habitats in Peninsular Malaysia. The ant species occurring in more than 50 per cent of the locations were Diacamma rugosum Oecophylla smaragdina Dolichoderus thoracicus Anoplolepis longipes Plagiolepis sp. a and Crematogaster sp. a. There was a trend that the ants were more diverse on the west coast than the east coast. During the collecting period the southern area had the least number of ant species. Statistically however the trend was not significant. Although the frequency of D. thoracicus was found to be more than 50 per cent the distribution was not well scattered. This might be due to the planting practice of the cocoa growers and the weather rather than the presence of the preferred host the coconut palm
